What is the difference between an edition and a volume?

Sometimes publishers will re-publish a book and include new information or chapters, each new version of the book is a new edition. A short book is usually published in one volume, however if a book is very long it may be split across several volumes. Not all editions of the book will have necessarily have the same number of volumes. eg.

• Published 2008, 1st edition: Volume 1, Volume 2, Volume 3
• Published 2008, 2nd edition: Volume 1, Volume 2
• Published 2009, 3rd edition: Volume 1, Volume 2, Volume 3, Volume 4
