Virtual journals in science and technology

The Virtual Journals in the Physical Sciences series has been jointly developed by the American Institute of Physics and the American Physical Society. Each Virtual Journal presents an online collection of relevant papers from a broad range of source journals in the physical sciences. Participating source journals include all journals published by APS and AIP, as well as a significant number of journals from other participating publishers, both on AIP’s Scitation platform and on other platforms. From the user’s perspective, the Virtual Journals look and feel like “real” journals, providing useful features such as tables of contents, freely available abstracts, links to source journal home pages, abstracts, and full-text articles, ability to search the journals, email alerts and RSS feeds. Subscribers to the source journal will be able to seamlessly access the full-text articles, while non-subscribers will have the option to purchase articles for immediate online purchase. Subscribers also have the ability to search across all issues of the Virtual Journals.

Papers from two more scholarly journals, EPL and Physics-Uspekhi are now included in the virtual journals.

New Science Journalism Project (NSJ)

Saturday, June 27th, 2009

NSJThe New Science Journalism Project (NSJ) is a new independent online environmental science magazine publishing news produced by students of media and science courses worldwide. The magazine itself is intended for everyone interested in environmental science news. The bottom line is to foster a space for professional communication of environmental science news in order to encourage the dissemination of valuable and researched environmental scientific information. Project is a global platform for university students to refine their science news publishing experience, to register and submit news.

Borrow journals from ‘New Journal Display’

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

It is now possible to borrow journals from the ‘New Journal Display’ in the Dorothy Hill Physical Sciences and Engineering Library. You no longer need to place a hold request on the new journal - just take the journal to the Loans Desk and they will check it out to you!

Physics journals in PSE Library

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

The following journals have been relocated in the Dorothy Hill Physical Sciences and Engineering Library. Please ask staff at the desk if you wish to retrieve an issue of the following titles:
The physical review QC1.P4 1959-1969
Physical review. A, General physics QC1.P422 1970-1989

Palaeontologia electronica

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

PE
The Library has made available a new electronic journal which should interest palaeontologists Palaeontologia electronica. It is a refereed journal sponsored by the Palaeontological Association, Paleontological Society and the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology. The publisher is Coquina Press, a non-profit organisation “whose sole purpose is to facilitate the dissemination of paleontological information through the publication of an open-access electronic journal”.

International Journal of Food Engineering

Friday, January 25th, 2008

The library has just acquired access to the International Journal of Food Engineering produced by the Berkeley Electronic Press. The founding editor is Professor Xiao Dong Chen of Monash University. The IJFE covers the following areas :

  • heat, mass transfer and fluid flow in food processing
  • food properties, including thermal, chemical and mechanical properties
  • food microstructure development and characterisation
  • electronics and instrumentation in the food industry
  • control and system engineering for the food industry
  • application of artificial intelligence in food engineering research and in industry
  • food biotechnology
  • thermal processing
  • non-thermal food processing
  • separation and purification processes for food production
  • food engineering education (course instruction, innovations in laboratory development, and classroom problems)
  • plant design using conceptual design techniques
  • mathematical modeling and software development for food processing purposes

The journal aims to publish high quality articles in engineering disciplines related to food processing and contains critical reviews, research articles, hypotheses (innovative, scientific views and systematic arguments on future directions of research or new interpretations of topics), shorter communications on significant continuing research results deserving rapid publication, critical thoughts and comments in the form of letters to the editor, and microstructure images with clear descriptions.

Nature publications: Did you know we have?

Thursday, January 17th, 2008

Two new Nature publications have recently been acquired:

Nature Geoscience

Nature Materials
  • Nature Geoscience is a multi-disciplinary journal aimed at bringing together research across the entire spectrum of the Earth Sciences.
  • Nature Materials covers research across all the materials sciences.

The Library also subscribes to:

  • Nature Physics
  • Nature Photonics
  • Nature Nanotechnology
  • Nature Biotechnology

A library catalogue keyword search for ‘nature’ and using the ‘Entire Collection’ drop down menu box to limit to ‘All Journals’ will display a complete list of Nature publications held by the UQ Library.

Using RSS to receive journal alerts

Friday, December 21st, 2007

rss.jpg

Many databases, online journals and websites are now providing RSS feeds for journal, table of contents (TOC), news alerts and updated search topic results. RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is an XML-based syndication format for distributing content on the Web.

To save RSS feeds you will need a feed reader. Feed readers can be web, desktop or email based. Web feeders include Google Reader or Bloglines; a popular desktop reader is Feedreader but there are numerous others. Email based feeds allow aggregators to send RSS feeds directly to your email account. An example of email feed is FeedBlitz. Here’s a brief overview of how to use RSS feeds with some science and engineering databases:

  • Web of Science - Save your search alert - once saved you will see an RSS feed – XML icon. Copy and paste the URL into your RSS reader. You will need to register with the Web of Knowledge to save alerts or set up tables of contents.
  • Compendex and Scopus - Click on the RSS icon once your search completed.
  • IEEE Xplore - RSS feeds are available for recently posted journal, transaction, and magazine issues to Tables of Contents Alerts. Browse journals and magazines, select the RSS icon and copy and paste the URL into your RSS reader.

Please contact the Library if you would like any information on setting up RSS feeds to receive alerts.
