Plugging into our future: the research powering the energy debate

Reaxys database training at UQ

Find out how to search Reaxys from an expert! Reaxys is Elsevier’s new research system allowing easy web access to the experimental chemical and reaction data found in Beilstein, Gmelin and Patent Chemistry databases.

Dr Yin Ping, Elsevier’s specialist trainer in the database Reaxys, will be running a training session here at Uni of Qld.

  • When: Monday 31 August, 10.00 -12.00
  • Where: Training Room, Level 2, Dorothy Hill Physical Sciences & Engineering Library

The workshop will be suitable to both new and experienced users of Reaxys and is open to all academics, researchers and students. There is no need to register.

Dr Barry Dunne is a specialist trainer from Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS). He will be visiting UQ in late May to run a training session on the new web version of SciFinder. This session is designed for academics and researchers.

Details are:

When: Tuesday 26 May, 1.00pm - 3.00pm
Where: Level 5, Dorothy Hill Physical Sciences & Engineering Library

Afternoon tea will be provided. There is no need to register.

SciFinder is a research discovery tool that allows you to explore the CAS databases that contain literature from many scientific disciplines including biomedical sciences, chemistry, engineering, materials science, agricultural science, and more - it is a great and very relevant database.

If you already use SciFinder come to the session and get your search queries answered. Remember Scifinder Scholar will be phased out in the very near future! Only the web version will be available.

If you haven’t used Scifinder come and see what the new web version can do for you.

Graduate Student Week

Research Higher Degree candidates (PhD & MPhil), Masters coursework students, and Honours students are all encouraged to participate in Graduate Student Week (GSW). Some workshops are availableonly to research higher degree candidates.

Open Access Seminar

All staff are invited to attend a forum to be held in Research Week – Open Access and the Changing Nature of Scholarly Communication.

A number of speakers will discuss open access policies, changes in scholarly communication and UQs responses.

Speakers include: Anthony Austin and Kylie Pappalardo, QUT; Professor Michael Pender, UQ; Professor Max Lu, UQ; Professor David Adams, UQ; Professor Alan Lawson, UQ; Keith Webster, UQ.

The Forum will be held on Monday 17 September 2007 1.15pm to 5pm in the Seminar Room, Level 4, Sustainable Minerals Institute, Sir James Foots Building.

NATIONAL ENGINEERING WEEK

National Engineering Week is being celebrated this month - the official week is from 18th to the 26th August. The Library is participating with a display in the Library foyer. UQ Library Excellence Award

Are you an undergraduate student studying at The University of Queensland?
If so, you may like to apply for the UQ Library Excellence Award.

Presented each year to up to three UQ undergraduates who demonstrate excellence in the use of the Library to enhance their studies, this prestigious award is worth $500 cash per winner. The prize is an acknowledgment of how Library resources are used to support teaching and learning.

How to apply:
Submit a 500-700 word essay to the University Librarian, UQ St Lucia, demonstrating how Library resources were used to produce an excellent assessment outcome.

Provide two statements of support from academic staff with your essay, indicating excellent use of Library services and collections.

Selection Criteria
Sophistication, originality and/or unusual depth or breadth in the use of Library resources, databases, primary resources and materials in all media.

Evidence of significant personal learning and the development of a habit of research and inquiry that shows the likelihood of persisting in future.

Exceptional ability to locate, select, evaluate and synthesise library resources and to use them in the creation of a project in any media that shows originality and/or has the potential to lead to original research.
