Indigenous win in fishing rights case

The High Court has confirmed one of the most significant cases under the Northern Territory Land Rights Act, giving traditional owners exclusive rights over tidal waters along Aboriginal land.

Finding Legislation

* Learn more about how to locate legislation for Queensland and the Commmonwealth of Australia, including how to find cases on specific sections of legislation.

This class is suitable for new law students or law students who want to develop their searching skills.

Sessions go for approximately 50 minutes.

No need to book; just come along.

UQ Library Excellence Award

Are you an undergraduate student studying at The University of Queensland? If so, you may like to apply for the UQ Library Excellence Award.

Presented each year to up to three UQ undergraduates who demonstrate excellence in the use of the Library to enhance their studies, this prestigious award is worth $500 cash per winner. The prize is an acknowledgment of how Library resources are used to support teaching and learning.

How to apply:

  • Submit a 500-700 word essay to the University Librarian, UQ St Lucia, demonstrating how Library resources were used to produce an excellent assessment outcome.
  • Provide two statements of support from academic staff with your essay, indicating excellent use of Library services and collections.

Selection Criteria:

  • Sophistication, originality and/or unusual depth or breadth in the use of Library resources, databases, primary resources and materials in all media.
  • Evidence of significant personal learning and the development of a habit of research and inquiry that shows the likelihood of persisting in future.
  • Exceptional ability to locate, select, evaluate and synthesise library resources and to use them in the creation of a project in any media that shows originality and/or has the potential to lead to original research.

Judging Panel:

  • University Librarian and Director of Learning Services
  • Chair, Library Committee of the Academic Board
  • UQ Student Union Representative

1 October 2007

Meet in the foyer of the Law Library, Level 2, Forgan Smith Building (Building 1).

Receive a free $2 photocopy/printing voucher for joining a tour.

If you can’t join a tour in person, you might like to take a Virtual Tour instead.

Congratulations to Maritime Moot Team

Congratulations to law students, Charles Ashton, James Green, Jenny Molloy and Rebecca James who represented UQ in the 8th International Maritime Arbitration Moot Competition in Melbourne this week.

They were listed as one of 8 finalists after winning each of their moots in the general rounds, but were defeated during the quarter finals.

James was named “Best Speaker - General Rounds”, which is a fabulous result. Well done Team!

New HeinOnline Interface

The new HeinOnline interface is now available. Try the new Advanced Search option or a Field Search, eg by author or a word within the text. Most importantly the printing capabilities are now vastly improved.

Two new databases have recently been added to the Hein suite Foreign and International Law Resources Database (FILRD)
and the English Reports (The English Reports are also available on the Justis database )

Changes to opening hours

The Law Library will be open until 6pm on the Fridays during the revision and examination period (8th, 15th & 22nd June).
The Law Library will commence vacation hours on 23rd June and will be closed on Saturday 23rd June.

Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is on again. New - lockable desk for hire

Did you know that there is now a lockable study desk for hire on Level 4 of the Library? This may be booked for 4 hours at a time.

Individual rooms may also be booked for 4 hours, Group rooms are available for 2 hours and lockers are available for the whole day.

Currently, all facilities may be booked at the Loans Desk. Telephone bookings are also accepted.

There is no charge for using these facilities so long as you return the key on time at the end of your booking.
