We’ve had a lot of queries over the past few days on how to find Carlill v Carbolic Smoke Ball Company [1893] 1 QB 256.
There are 2 ways to find this case. Option 1 is the quickest, but you may wish to work through Option 2 as it will assist you in finding cases in the future. We’ll be covering the process described in Option 2 during the LAWS1000 tutes in Week 3.
Option 1
Go to the Course Resources page for LAWS1000 and find a scanned copy of the case in the alphabetical list
Option 2
1) Follow the link from the Legal Research Guide to Abbreviations and use an abbreviations index to look up QB
2) You’ll see QB stands for Queen’s Bench. Do a title search on the Library catalogue for Queen’s Bench
3) This will take you to the publication Law Reports. Queen’s Bench
4) The catalogue gives you the call number for the print reports and you will find these on Level 4 of the Law Library
5) The catalogue also indicates that the reports are available via the database Westlaw. (Currently, the catalogue indicates that they are only available for years 1875-1890 and 1901-1952, however this is a mistake which will be corrected soon.)
6) Follow the link through to Westlaw. The easiest way to find a case is to click on the Find link at the top of the screen
7) Enter the citation for the case - [1893] 1 QB 256- into the box on the left hand side of the screen and change the publication country to United Kingdom
8) Click on the link to the case citation in the result summary for the full text of the case
