If you would like to learn some of the tips and tricks of using Microsoft Word, you might like to attend this Friday’s Ask I.T. class. The session runs for 2 hours and begins at 10am. Topics such as formatting paragraphs with bullets and numbers, inserting tables, images, section breaks, page numbering and tabs will be covered. Suitable for all higher degree students, whether just starting research or close to completion, this seminar aims to provide higher degree students with an understanding of the theses completion process and provide helpful advice on making this process run smoothly. Putting the correct processes in place early means that students can save a great deal of time during completion.

Dr Nam Nguyen discusses the writing and publishing process; including structuring your research and formatting the thesis. In addition he will provide advice on the before, during and after thesis submission process. Ms Jacky Cribb provides advice from the library about developing successful research skills, using EndNote and avoiding last minute hassles.

There have been some changes to the after-hours access to the Gatton Library. A new swipe card reader has been installed. This means that the current swipe cards will no longer work.

Students will use their student card instead. Students need to take their student card to the Student Centre and ask it to be activated for access to the library.

Could students with the current swipe cards please return them to the library?

External students will have their cards activated before they attend residential schools. It does make it important for students to obtain a student card. There will be no other way to access the library after hours.

If you would like to know some of the tips, tricks and know-hows of using Microsoft Office you might be interested in attending one or all of the classes Ask I.T. has scheduled for Gatton for the second semester. In particular, students about to begin writing a thesis or any other very long document are advised to attend the Advanced Word class.

EndNote is an advanced referencing product and is a vital part of the researchers’ skill set. It can perform a wide range of referencing tasks, and there are extensive possibilities for the advanced user to customise the software to individual needs.

EndNote Part 1 includes setting up and importing references into your EndNote Library.
EndNote Part 2 covers creating a list of references, and using EndNote with Word to insert citations and create a bibliography.

Troubled Waters: Confronting the Water Crisis in Australia’s Cities

Australian cities have traditionally relied for their water on a ‘predict-and-provide’ philosophy that gives primacy to big engineering solutions. In more recent years privatised water authorities, seeking to maximise consumption and profits, have reinforced the emphasis on increasing supply. Now the cities must cope with the stresses these policies have imposed on the eco-systems from which they harvest water, into which they discharge wastes, and on which they are located. Residents are having to pay more for their water, while the cities themselves are becoming less sustainable.

Must we build more dams and desalination plants, or should we be managing the demand for urban water more prudently? This book explores the demand for urban water and how it has changed in response to shifting social mores over the past century. It explains how demand for centralised provision of water might be reshaped to enable the cities to better cope with expected changes in supply as our climate changes. And it discusses the implications of property rights in water for proposals to privatise water services.
