Microsoft Word 2007 Advanced

If you are about to commence writing a thesis or other very long document, or even if you have already started, this Friday’s Ask I.T. Advanced Word class will help you to understand the features of Word that will help make your task easier.

At the end of this class you will be able to:
* use styles to format your document consistently
* use the Outline view to create headings
* create an automatic table of contents
* insert cross-references to items in the document
* understand the issues involved with creating a long document
* convert your document to PDF

Microsoft Word Level 2 Training

If you would like to learn some of the tips and tricks of using Microsoft Word, you might like to attend this Friday’s Ask I.T. class. The session runs for 2 hours and begins at 10am. Topics such as formatting paragraphs with bullets and numbers, inserting tables, images, section breaks, page numbering and tabs will be covered. Ask I.T. Training classes for second semester

If you would like to know some of the tips, tricks and know-hows of using Microsoft Office you might be interested in attending one or all of the classes Ask I.T. has scheduled for Gatton for the second semester. In particular, students about to begin writing a thesis or any other very long document are advised to attend the Advanced Word class.

• PowerPoint 2007 Level 1 – Friday 29 August
• Excel 2007 Level 1 – Friday 26 September
• Excel 2007 Level 2 - Friday 10 October

More details about the classes can be found on the Ask I.T. Training website. No bookings are required for most of the classes, just turn up. However, bookings for the Advanced Word class are essential.

EndNote Training at Gatton

EndNote is an advanced referencing product and is a vital part of the researchers’ skill set. It can perform a wide range of referencing tasks, and there are extensive possibilities for the advanced user to customise the software to individual needs.

EndNote Part 1 includes setting up and importing references into your EndNote Library.
EndNote Part 2 covers creating a list of references, and using EndNote with Word to insert citations and create a bibliography.

Researchers and Postgraduates Information Discovery

Postgraduate students are encouraged to come to RAPID (Researchers & Postgraduates Information Discovery) sessions in the Library. RAPID is a flexibly delivered information skills course developed by the UQ Library for postgraduates and researchers. Included in the Rapid sessions is EndNote training.

Publish, not perish: the art & craft of publishing in scholarly journals.

The University of Colorado Libraries have designed an online research tutorial that focus on how to publish in academic journals.

It describes the world of academic publishing, how to to plan and write a paper, how to find the most likely journals to target, defines the “impact factor”, gives you the details of the actual publishing process, the world of Open Access, and how to fit writing papers into an already busy schedule.

This is a useful resource for researchers just beginning to publish and for those who want to update their knowledge of academic publishing.

UQ eSpace - online to the world presentation

The UQ Gatton Library invites staff and students to a presentation about UQ eSpace, the University of Queensland’s institutional digital repository for publications, research, and teaching materials.

It provides free, searchable access to openly available UQ research, publications and teaching materials and manages their long-term archiving. This deposit collection of papers showcases UQ’s research output across a range of disciplines and is indexed by Google and Yahoo.

Advanced Word Class

Help with creating long documents in Word is just a class away. We are offering an advanced class in Microsoft Word 2007 on 16 April. The class covers using Styles, creating headings in Outline view, inserting a Table of Contents, inserting cross references in a document and other issues with creating very long documents. Participants will need to be very confident users of Word. Bookings are essential for this class. EndNote Training

Find out how to set up your own EndNote library, how to import records after searching databases or the library catalogue and use EndNote to write papers and bibliographies.

EndNote is a bibliographic software most suited for research and postgraduate academic output.

Gatton Library holds EndNote training immediately following its RAPID sessions. It is important you attend all the EndNote sessions in the order indicated to gain the most from the training.
