We have now provided an alternative way of dealing with APA 6th edition. This is a new output style which does not require any modification of your reference types. The output style is accompanied by instructions on how to enter data correctly in your EndNote library, as well as other useful tips on using APA 6th with EndNote.

The output style and the accompanying notes can be downloaded from our EndNote styles page.

A new EndNote style for APA 6th edition is available for download from the EndNote website.

The download is a zip file which contains the new output style, a modified Reference Types Table, and a PDF document giving instructions on where to save the style and how to import the reference types table.

The modified reference types table will be a problem for people who have already modified their reference types, because it will overwrite all of their changes. It provides a new “Electronic Book Section” reference type, and it introduces some other new fields, such as “Website Title.”

The new style seems to cope fairly well with normal journal articles. If you have the DOI in the DOI field of your references, it doesn’t matter whether you use the Journal Article or Electronic Article reference type.

However if the journal article was accessed electronically, but doesn’t have a DOI, you must use the Electronic Article reference type and identify the home page of the journal, and put that in the URL field.

Perhaps most people will just pretend that they accessed the articles in printed form?

There is a problem with references which have more than seven authors (which is fairly common nowadays). While the provisions for entering multiple authors in the text of the document have not changed, the provisions for the reference list specify that when a work has more than seven authors, you should list the first six authors, followed by the three points of omission, followed by the name of the last author, e.g.:

Gilbert, D. G., McLennan, J. F., Rabinovich, N. E., Sugai, C., Plath, L. C., Asgaard, G., … Boutros, N. (2004)

EndNote currently has no capacity for formatting references like this.

The most relevant sections of the 6th edition of the APA manual have been scanned and are available for download by UQ staff and students from our Referencing Styles page.

The developers have produced a plugin for EndNote X2 which allows the user to locate references that have not been added to any of the Groups. Quite a lot of people have been asking how to do this, so it should be a useful feature.

See the installation instructions.

The plugin inserts an extra command “Unfiled References” on the Tools menu.

We do not plan to incorporate the plugin into the EndNote X2 software on public machines in the UQ Library, but EndNote users can download it to their own computers (Windows or Macintosh).

This feature will probably be incorporated into the next version of EndNote.

The latest version of EndNote is now available for download by all UQ staff and students.

For a detailed guide to new features, see our What’s New in EndNote X2 page. The Smart Groups and Find Full Text feature should be popular with many users.

If you are upgrading from an earlier version of EndNote, there are two issues that you should particularly note:

Folder Locations: Read the information on our What’s New page. When upgrading, you must go to Edit>Preferences>Folder Locations and then click on the EndNote Defaults button to set up the location for the personal folders. If you download or edit any styles, filters or connection files, save them in these personal folders.

Online Search (Connection Files): The EndNote software supplied by the UQ Library includes the X2.0.1 patch. When you open a library, you will be able to see the three mode icons in the top left-hand corner of the library window. We strongly recommend that you select the local mode (middle icon). If you want to do an online search, use the online mode (right icon) and return to local mode when finished. We advise against using the integrated mode (left icon). See the information on our What’s New page.

We now have the ability to search individual Proquest databases using an EndNote connection file, which will import the references straight into your EndNote library.

We have set up this facility for the following databases:

ABI/Inform Global
Academic Research Library
Proquest Education
Proquest Social Sciences

These are all listed on our EndNote Connections page.

You download the same Proquest connection file, regardless of which database you want to search. You also have to follow the link to obtain a username and password from our password server, and when you input those, Proquest will know which database you want to search.

There is no IP authentication, so off-campus users should be able to use these connection files from home with a commercial Internet service provider.

The best search option is probably “Abstract (Word/Phrase)” — type a single word or a single phrase to search the abstracts of the articles.

The references will not import with the full text of the articles, but it will often be possible to locate the full text of the articles from EndNote using WebBridge. The procedure for that is given on this FAQ.

The 3rd edition of the MLA Style Manual of the Modern Language Association of America was published in 2008. It will come into force in 2009.

The third edition introduces some significant changes. All references should now include an indication of the medium (e.g. Print, Web, Videocassette, DVD). Web addresses (URLs) are no longer required for online references. Periodical references should include both a volume number and an issue number (if available).

An EndNote output style for MLA 3rd edition is now available for download from our EndNote Styles Page. It should be used in conjunction with the explanatory notes.
