MLA style — new 3rd edition

Friday, October 31st, 2008

The 3rd edition of the MLA Style Manual of the Modern Language Association of America was published in 2008. It will come into force in 2009.

The third edition introduces some significant changes. All references should now include an indication of the medium (e.g. Print, Web, Videocassette, DVD). Web addresses (URLs) are no longer required for online references. Periodical references should include both a volume number and an issue number (if available).

An EndNote output style for MLA 3rd edition is now available for download from our EndNote Styles Page. It should be used in conjunction with the explanatory notes.

Local output styles now working in EndNote Web

Monday, May 19th, 2008

As explained in a previous post, we can now make our local UQ output styles available in EndNote Web. There were initial problems with this feature, but our local output styles are now working in EndNote Web, and can be used to format Word documents.

APA style and electronic references

Monday, March 17th, 2008

In 2007, the American Psychological Association (APA) produced a new Style Guide to Electronic References. UQ staff and students can access the full text of that guide online.

The APA 5th style supplied with version X1 of EndNote was amended to reflect these new guidelines. However there were errors in that style, and we have produced an amended version which can be downloaded from our EndNote styles page.

We also have a FAQ which explains how to enter data for electronic references into your EndNote library, so that the amended output style will format the references correctly.

Latest on EndNote Web

Monday, March 10th, 2008

The Library is now able to add our local EndNote filters, styles and connection files to the EndNote Web site.

When you look at filters, styles or the “online search” databases in EndNote Web, you will now see some UQ Favourites at the top of each list. The names of our favourites all begin with the numeral “1″.

We have written a new page on downloading references from databases to EndNote Web, which we hope will explain the position a little better.

There is a problem with our UQ Favourite output styles. At the moment these styles can be used to generate a bibliography in EndNote Web, but they are not working with the Cite While You Write Function in Microsoft Word.

If you are using Cite While You Write in Microsoft Word, use one of the other output styles, listed below the UQ Favourite styles. Our “Harvard 2002″ style is available there as the style called Harvard (Qld).

AUSTRALIAN GUIDE TO LEGAL CITATION AND ENDNOTE X

31/1/07 AUSTRALIAN GUIDE TO LEGAL CITATION AND ENDNOTE X
Those of you who use our EndNote output styles and guide for the Australian Guide to Legal Citation may be interested to know that I have updated the guide to cover EndNote X. See our EndNote styles page at:
http://www.library.uq.edu.au/faqs/endnote/styles.html

The output styles themselves have not changed, but I have produced a revised RefTypeTable file for use with the styles. There is a link to this from the guide. The revised file will hide the new reference types in EndNote X and can be used with EndNote 9 or 8 also.
I have amended the guide to remove the suggestion to turn off instant formatting. EndNote was unstable with footnote styles up until EndNote 7, but I don’t think that is an issue anymore, so it should be safe to use Cite While You Write with the AGLC footnote styles.I have also added a secton on the cross-reference feature in Word. This is nothing to do with EndNote, but it is a very useful way of dealing with the AGLC requirements for repeat citations.

A filter for the MIDIRS (Maternity and Infant Care) database has been added to our EndNote Filters page at:
