Transferring a bibliography from a Word document to EndNote

Monday, August 11th, 2008

This is the most frequently asked of all EndNote questions: “How can I transfer a bibliography that I typed in a Word document into EndNote?”

There aren’t many easy options, but we can offer a few tips.

Downloading from PubMed and linking to full text articles

Monday, April 7th, 2008

If you use a filter to download records from PubMed, your EndNote references do not contain any links to take you to the full text of the articles. Our FAQ on PubMed and EndNote suggests a few ways of dealing with this problem.

Latest on EndNote Web

Monday, March 10th, 2008

The Library is now able to add our local EndNote filters, styles and connection files to the EndNote Web site.

When you look at filters, styles or the “online search” databases in EndNote Web, you will now see some UQ Favourites at the top of each list. The names of our favourites all begin with the numeral “1″.

We have written a new page on downloading references from databases to EndNote Web, which we hope will explain the position a little better.

There is a problem with our UQ Favourite output styles. At the moment these styles can be used to generate a bibliography in EndNote Web, but they are not working with the Cite While You Write Function in Microsoft Word.

If you are using Cite While You Write in Microsoft Word, use one of the other output styles, listed below the UQ Favourite styles. Our “Harvard 2002″ style is available there as the style called Harvard (Qld).

Direct export from Expanded Academic

Monday, January 14th, 2008

Direct export from the Expanded Academic database to EndNote has been available for some time. However the results were poor, and we did not recommend using it.

The problems seem to have been fixed, and it is working quite well now. See the instructions on our Filters page at:

Revised filter for Pubmed

Monday, June 25th, 2007

A revised EndNote filter for the Pubmed database is now available for download from our website.

Several people had asked me if it was possible to download the full journal title from Pubmed, in addition to the standard abbreviated journal title. The new filter will import the full journal title into the Alternate Journal field in EndNote.

Bear in mind that many Pubmed records do not include the full journal title. Where the full journal title is available, it is extracted from the National Library of Medicine catalogue and is not always in a format that would be used in normal bibliographic citation.

The revised filter will also import the Digital Object Identifier (DOI) into the URL field.

Informit Databases and EndNote

Monday, May 21st, 2007

Informit produce a large number of databases containing references on Australian topics.

These databases now support direct export of references to EndNote. The procedures are quite simple and are explained in our FAQ.

As explained in that FAQ, the references sometimes do not import very accurately into EndNote. For this reason, we still maintain filters for some of the more important Informit databases.

However our testing suggests that direct export works fairly well with the following databases:

APAIS (APA-Fulltext)
Australasian Medical Index (Meditext)
Australian Education Index (A+ Education)
Australian Natural Resources Index

Direct export is certainly a much easier way of getting references into your EndNote library. But remember: the references may require quite a bit of editing after import.

Note for users of Pubmed

Wednesday, May 9th, 2007

I recently posted a link to our FAQ on linking from EndNote to the full text of journal articles.

If you download references from Pubmed, see the note at the end of that FAQ, and be sure to download the amended filter and connection file from our EndNote website.

Web of Knowledge Alerts - Import into Endnote

Tuesday, February 27th, 2007

There has recently been a change to the format of the email alerts produced from the Web of Knowledge databases. These emails are now tagged in the standard ISI format, so they can be imported into EndNote using the standard IS-CE filter.
Our Web of Knowledge FAQ gives full details:

Expanded Academic Index Filter

18/1/07: New Filter for Infotrac Expanded Academic Index
There is a new search interface for Expanded Academic. Many of you may have been using it for some time.It is now possible to download records and filter them into EndNote. The filter and download procedures are on our website at:
http://www.library.uq.edu.au/faqs/endnote/filters.html#exp_acad
There is also a direct export function which can be accessed by clicking on the link “How to Cite Marked Items”. However the references will not import accurately, so we are recommending that users download and filter records instead.

A filter for the MIDIRS (Maternity and Infant Care) database has been added to our EndNote Filters page at:
