Good luck in your exams!

Friday, October 24th, 2008

The staff at the Biological Sciences Library would like to wish all our students good luck in the upcoming exams. And because we know you’re all diligent students, we’re sure we’ll see you all studying hard in the library rather than living it up during Swot Vac! Keep in mind that if you are in the library, Level 4 is the quietest area and with our ongoing shushing patrol, it is very conducive to study.

It must be that time of year again where the demand on laptops is even greater than normal, something we didn’t think possible. It seems no sooner than we open the doors than the laptops go screaming out of them, sometimes even in the hands of a student.
So if you want a laptop for the day it is a very good idea to get in and grab one before 9:00am. But if you desperately need one and there are none left then there are certain periods through out the day when they sometimes come back. This is around lunch time and late afternoon, generally on the hour. Check with desk staff around, 12:00, 2:00 and 4:00 and if your get a little lucky then you might get your hands on one of these most rare of species.

openaccess.bmp You may or may not have noticed the library has had displays about Open Access in regards to scholarly journals recently. If you are uncertain what Open Access is or if it applies to you or just want to know a bit more about then the library has developed a website designed to fill you in on the major issues surrounding Open Access and the key resources you need to find out more about it.
Feel free to check it out under the Toolkit link in the top navigation bar on the library’s home page, or follow this link, Open Access.

The Jacaranda’s are blooming

Sunday, October 5th, 2008
jacaranda.bmp As anyone who has been at UQ for a while will know when the Jacaranda’s bloom it means one thing, student’s stress levels skyrocket. It is that time of year again with final exams just around the corner.
During this stressful time we are hoping that people will realise this and attempt to allow for the additional stress that this time of year brings. So if you find yourself becoming a little terse with a fellow student or staff member please try to relax and take a few deep breaths. If this doesn’t help come and see library staff and we will see what we can do to help moderate the outcome to a result where everyone is satisfied.
