Location: Library Conference Room, Level 1, Duhig Building (Building 2)
Date: Friday, 5th September
Time: 10.00 - 11.00 am

To support research and teaching in Australian universities the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has an Agreement with the Australian Vice Chancellors Committee (AVCC) to make available Confidentialised Unit Record Files (CURFs). The agreement began in January 1999 and there are currently 33 universities participating in the Agreement. Staff and students of the university are eligible to apply to access this data.

A CURF contains responses made by individuals or organisations to an ABS survey with all identifying information removed. That is, names and addresses are removed, along with any unusual combinations of responses that may lead to a person’s or organisation’s identity being derived.
Details of the survey data available from each CURF are listed in an accompanying Technical Paper. CURFs are the most detailed data available from the ABS and are thus subject to strict terms of use.

Information covered in the session will include:

What is CURF microdata; How to apply for CURF microdata ; Getting access to CURF microdata; Using the Remote Access Data Laboratory (RADL); Obligations when using CURF microdata; Renewing access to data.

Further information about CURFs may be found on the Australian Bureau of Statistics website:

http://www.abs.gov.au/websitedbs/D3310114.nsf/home/CURF:+Microdata+Entry+Page

If you have any questions about this session or accessing CURFs please contact Karen Borchardt at K.Borchardt@library.uq.edu.au or 3346 4331.

The Library has purchased a site-license for the QUOSA software:
http://www.library.uq.edu.au/quosa/

Advantages of QUOSA:
• Downloads multiple PDFs – FAST
• Organizes PDFs into folder trees with links back to EndNote or RefWorks
• Deep searches inside PDFs as every word of the article (not just in the title and abstract) is indexed.

QUOSA can be used when searching PubMed, Ovid Medline, Scopus and the Web of Knowledge databases. QUOSA is integrated with EndNote and RefWorks.

Download the software from http://www.quosa.com/downloads.php
and choose the subscriber version. (Suggestion - do NOT enable startup accelerator )

To learn how to use QUOSA efficiently you can:

Do the online tutorials from http://www.med.yale.edu/library/education/guides/feature/quosa

View the demo videos from http://www.quosa.com/demos.html

Come to a demonstration : Friday June 20th 2.30 - 3.30 in the Social Sciences and Humanities Library conference Room - level 1, building 2.

Enjoy!
